Board of Directors minutes posted - August 9, 2006

The minutes from the August 9, 2006 meeting of the Board of Directors of the SFSS are now online. Relevant notes from the meeting:
  • The chair was Lucas Schuler, former Chairperson of CFS-BC. However, he was merely appointed as chairperson pro tem, not as chairperson for the semester. The failure of the Board to appoint a chairperson for the semester is a violation of By-Law 8, section 10 [a].
  • Even though there were 35 guests in attendance, the Board nonetheless voted to go in camera (i.e. closed session), and stayed there for 2.5 hours.
  • After the 2.5 hour delay, the Board voted to move into a "committee of the whole" in order to permit an open discussion. Grad At-Large Representative Benjamin Milne moved that this discussion should last for up to thirty minutes, but this was quickly amended to reduce this to twenty minutes. Treasurer Vanessa Kelly (who supported the reduction in the discussion period) started off the discussion by "stat[ing] that the Board is, in no way, attempting to curtail discussion...."
  • Internal Relations Officer Wei Li stated that the decision to terminate the Graduate Issues and University Relations Coordinator (GIURC) was his. He offered no explanation as to where this authority came from.

Dude, you've got a great blog going. It deals with some interesting issues at student unions across the country in an open and resonably factual way , which is something this country has needed for a long time.

Don't kill off your larger readership by boring us to tears with procedural motions at SFU council. Leave that to one of the other instant SFU blogs.

Instead, you should concentrate on the big stuff: like, why don't either of the national student groups post their financials on line? Why can't CFS members (as opposed to "member locals" get hold of copies of CFS financials? How many people will CFS have to fire if the new minority owners of Travel CUTS manage to turn off the flow of funds from CUTS to CFS? And, how much money, exactly does CFS make from its health care plans (a disguised tax on students to support CFS)?

Unfortunately, most of the "instant SFU blogs" have disappered. sfusolidarity.blogspot.com, sfustudentsfordemocracy.blogspot.com, and even blog.sfssdemocracynow.ca have all ceased publication.

I am, however, committed to ensuring that this blog retains its pan-Canadian focus. In September, when all the student newspapers start publishing, I should have plenty to write about from all across the country.

I know that I am interested in this issue all the way from Ontario.

I totally support the idea of posting the financials, minutes and etc. online. Given that they come to the AGMs, what is the big secret? In fact, a public societies, student unions and the CFS should happily make them available to anyone, member or not.
Even active members of locals don't always have the easiest time getting this stuff, and usually audits are available at the meeting, rather than with time to review before the AGM, which is a problem as not all students have the ability to read or question financial statements with any ease and need time to prepare for this.
I would also like to know how much revenue goes to the National Student Health Network. I don't necessarily resent the funds--so long as the program is adeqately staffed to provide a real service. But if it is just paying two brokerage fees, that is very problematic.
I agree--great blog, very useful, and very needed!
