- Student Forum met on September 27, despite an attempt by Member Services Officer Glyn Lewis to cancel the meeting. The membership unanimously elected myself as Chair. Since President Shawn Hunsdale had failed to call a Special General Meeting upon receipt of a petition containing the signatures of well over the 5% required by our By-Laws, Forum voted to call a Special General Meeting on its own. Forum also adopted a motion of non-confidence in the Board of Directors, censured the members of the Labour Committee, and replaced two Executives on the Constitution and Policy Review Committee with two of its own members.
- On September 29, the Board of Directors apparently met. On motion from Member Services Officer Glyn Lewis, the Board voted to hold their Annual General Meeting on October 25, at 2:30 p.m.— at the exact same time when Forum had voted to call their Special General Meeting!
- In my capacity as Chair of Forum for the fall semester, I have created a Forum website. This website contains information regarding the activities of Forum, and also includes a page dedicated to the Special General Meeting that we have called.
- I have been informed that an emergency Board of Directors meeting is being held today at 1 p.m. Apparently, the entire meeting will be in camera (i.e. confidential).
- Douglas College has suspended the remission of student fees to the Douglas Students' Union. The latter's website has no comment; not very surprising, considering that it has not been modified whatsoever for several months. The Administration has published a letter to students in The Other Press, the Douglas student newspaper.
- The Liberals have won a majority in the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick under the leadership of Shawn Graham. Their new Cabinet includes Kelly Lamrock as Minister of Education, who will be responsible for primary and secondary education in the province. Mr. Lamrock was National Chairperson of the Canadian Federation of Students in 1993 and later founded the New Brunswick Student Alliance. At its first meeting (held today), the NB Cabinet "approved the creation of $2,000 grants to first-year university students and the elimination of parental and spousal contribution requirements for student loans."

Too many things to comment on! Titus: you gotta post these things separartely so the comment discussion will be a little more organized!
could you expand on the reasons for the President of the USSU's resignation?
Summarize the court case?
Ditto to anonymous up there. So much in one post.
People need to check out that Douglas College thing closely. The fact is that outside Quebec, student unions have very few legal rights when it comes to fee collections. Institutions are within their legal rights to cut-off a student union if the student union cease to behave in a lawful manner.
Which opens up another possible level of action at SFU. If the President of a union simply refuses to abide by his own by-laws in order to illegally cling to power, and deny students their legitimate democratic opportunity ot have their say, do concerned students have the right/duty to ask their institution to shut down the student union? How bad would things have to get before you would go down that road?
Re: NB. Kelly Lamrock isn't in charge of PSE - just primary and secondary.
Anonymous 1: Will do.
Anonymous 2: In British Columbia, students' unions have a fair bit of legal protection. The University Act and the College and Institute Act both provide that there are only two cases when an institution can fail to remit students' union fees:
"(a) the student society fails to do one of the following in a timely manner:
(i) make available to its members annual audited financial statements and a report on those financial statements by an auditor who meets the requirements of section 42 of the Society Act;
(ii) inform the board in writing that the requirements set out in subparagraph (i) have been met;
(b) the student society is struck off the register in accordance with section 71 of the Society Act."
Anonymous 3: Right, my mistake.
