"Panel on Current Affairs in Student Politics"
I will be participating in a panel discussion on "Current Affairs in Student Politics" at the upcoming 69th National Conference of the Canadian University Press. My fellow panellists will be Ian Boyko, Government Relations Coordinator of the Canadian Federation of Students, and Carson Jerema, Editor-in-Chief of The Manitoban. Beyond the title, no specific topics for discussion have been set, though I am sure that the discussion will be most interesting. I will also be attending the CUP conference.

see you there.

Reading your blog is like reading a celeb tabloid... you know its sensationalist and not really accurate, but sometimes you read it anyhow. Like junk food for the brain. Its funny like the John Stewart Show or something, because you don't know if its for real or not... sometimes it seems like it is, and sometimes you know its just a for fun, but sometimes its like not even John Stewart knows if its real or not...Weird. I guess that would make student union representatives the celebs.
Nothing about the goings on at Grant Macewan? I'm suprised!
Grant Macewan? Get in line - there's interesting stuff happening all over. (i.e http://www.nipissingyou.ca/)
I guess until Joey and Titus get together on one big super-blog, there won't be enough time to capture everything...
In my experience, Webserve.ca is the problem.
Titus and I have discussed a merger, but decided against it. By being separate, we are better protected.
A good example of this will be the upcoming McMaster Students Union election. Titus can comment, I cannot. There is a complete ban upon student communication about MSU affairs during the election. Only the candidates are allowed to express viewpoints. Students, may only express viewpoints if those viewpoints are expressed in the Silhouette. Otherwise, the student in question can be punished under the student code of conduct.
If Titus and I were merged, I would be responsible for his speech.
Any updates on how the Panel btw Titus, Boyko and Carson went? If so, could you fill us in pls?
To make clear,
Some of my comments on the SFSS situation were very strong and were close to crossing the line. If Titus and I joined in one megablog, he would be partially responsible for my posts.
Titus was great during the panel, but even better at plenary - he sings very well!

A lovely singing voice indeed. :)
It seems both Messrs Gregory and Coleman [www.joeycoleman.ca/blog] have slackened their appetite for blogging in '07.
What gives?
I demand more cross Canada leads about hot happenings in student celebrity world!
I've heard that at the CFS-BC biannual meeting there was no mention of the Douglas College loan.
That's a fine yarn, but do you have leaked PDFs of student union executives' notebooks to prove it?
Titus singing Sesame Street made. my. day.
Any videos or documentation about the panel. I'm pretty interested in hearing what was said.
When I heard about the Titus-CFS-Toban panel I tried to have one of my correspondents @ NASH cover it.
Unfortunately, the scribes instead spent their time at NASH ambling through downtown Vancouver and stimulating the local economy.
I can confirm that the CFS BC loan to the DSU has been secured agains the DSU building (finally) so that is good news in terms of securing CFS members funds, even if you disagree with the loan in the first place.
The loan *was* mentioned in executive reports to the members (as a positive thing) at the August CFS BC SGM and debated (as a negative thing) as well. Perspectives on the issue were of course very divergent and divisive.
There was also mention of the DSU loan at the national meeting, with a prepared statement presented to the members, and some unions raising their concerns very vocally at closing plenary. They were particularly concerned about the impact on their well-managed student unions of the negative media and defence of such poor management. Their major concern was that when the CFS implicitly condones the mismanagment at one student union it makes it easy for universities or governments to attack well-managed student unions where there is no provincial legislation protecting SU fees (as there is in BC). Which of course is true. It also in my opinion makes students mistrust their student union, which makes it hard for all student unions to function effectively.
I don't know if the DSU issue was raised again at the BC CFS AGM in January 07. But I heard (this is second hand) this may be because no audit was presented at the AGM (which means there was nothing new to discuss about the loan since the august meeting). There *was* heated debate about the absent audit, especially from a couple of guys at the finance committee.
